Music
The Pacific Symphony Orchestra has existed since 1935. Its repertoire is Russian and foreign classical works, including Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Gershwin, and others. Concerts are performed at the Maxim Gorky Drama Theater. The Philharmonic Society is located at #13 Svetlanskaya St., tel: 22-30-75. Regular concerts of classical music are performed there.
There are two halls seating 860 and 140 at the House of Fleet Officers. The hall of Seamen's Culture Palace can accomodate 1,200 people. Youth's House's hall will seat 500 people.
Expocenters
Expo-complex is located at #19 Okeansky Prospekt, tel: 26-76-46, 26-61-74, fax: 26-76-46, 22-72-26. It was opened in 1993. Up to 6 exhibitions are annually held at this center. The subjects of the exhibitions may include consumer goods, trade equipment, bank and office equipment, advertisement, information and polygraphic services, security systems, cinema, photo, video and audio technical equipment, automobiles, medical equipment, etc. Russian firms and companies from Asian-Pacific Rim countries participate in the exhibitions. The area of the exhibition pavilions totals 700 sq. meters (7,531 sq. feet). Entrance is normally free.
Gallery of Modern Art Art Etage is located at #22 Svetlanskaya St. (Province Administration Building), tel/fax:22-98-18. The Gallery was opened in 1990 and since then has been arranging exhibitions of modern artists from Russia and abroad. Working hours are 10:30 - 18:00, closed on Sundays. Admission costs 2 - 5 roubles ($0.3-$1). The area of the exhibition pavilion totals 700 sq. meters (7,531 sq. feet). 15,000-20,000 people visit the Gallery annualy. Art Etage has housed the exhibitions of modern Russian artists living abroad (M. Shemyakin, O. Rabin), artists from St.-Petersburg and Holland, and an exhibition of Japanese photos.
Theaters
The Maxim Gorky Regional Drama Theater is located at #49 Svetlanskaya St., tel: 22-01-36, 26-40-34, 26-47-69, 26-45-87, fax: 26-40-34. The theater was established in 1972. Plays for both children and adults, including dramas, comedies and musicals, are staged in the theater. In March 1996 the Foothill theater from Nevada toured in Vladivostok. The Gorky Theater is headed by Yefim Zvenyatsky. The best known actors of the theater are Alexander Slavsky, Alexander Zaporozhets, Tatyana Danilchenko, Irina Prisyazhnyuk, Svetlana Salakhutdinova, and Alexander Ponomarenko. The season lasts from September through May. Performances are held every day, except Monday. The plays usually begin at 18:00. The cost of tickets ranges from 10 to 35 roubles ($1.5-$6). The hall of the theater can accomodate 916 people.
The Yefim Zvenyatsky's Show is attached to the theater. The theater's actors sing popular variety songs. Almost all stars of the Russian variety touring in Vladivostok perform on this stage. The cost of the ticket for the Yefim Zvenyatsky Show ranges from 50-100 ($8-$16) to 100-500 ($16-$80) roubles (with the performance of stars).
Chamber Drama Theater is located at #15A Svetlanskaya St., tel: 22-40-78, 22-52-16, fax: 22-40-78. It was established in 1946. Chamber Drama Theater performs in the classical traditions, staging only the plays written by Russian dramatists, such as "Sea-Gull" by Anton Chekhov, "At the Bottom" by Maxim Gorky, "A Month in the Village" by Ivan Turgenyev, "Thunderstorm" by Alexander Ostrivsky, an "Ivan the Terrible" by Alexey Tolstoy. "At the Bottom" proved to be a special event in the theater life of Russia and was positively received among critics. The artistic leader and the general director of the theater is Leonid Anisimov. The leading actors are Alexander Volosyanko, Galina Kopylova, Viktor Baygulov, Nina Lenskaya, and Eduard Prokoptsov. Plays for both children and adults are staged in this theater. The season lasts 10 months. The ticket costs 5 roubles ($0.8) for children and 10-15 roubles ($2-$3) for adults. The theater's two halls can accomodate 400 and 100 people respectively.
Primorsky Province Puppet Theater is located at #8 Petra Velikogo St., tel/fax: 22-13-44, 26-04-21, 26-48-11. It was opened in 1940. Plays are staged for children as well as for adults. The theater's style is a combination of various systems. The repertoire mainly includes plays written by Russian authors, among whom are such classics of children's literature as Pyotr Yershov and Sergey Mikhalkov. Plays written by Hans Christian Andersen and Sharl Perro are also staged. The zartistic leader of the theater is Viktor Busarenko. The leading actors are Viktor Pokulevsky, Natalya Penkova, and Lyudmila Krasnokutskaya. The season lasts from October through June. The ticket costs 6 roubles ($1). There are 350 seats in the theater. In October 1996 the first International Festival "Puppets' World" with participants from Japan, Korea, USA, and New Zealand took place at the theater.
